Fresenius Kabi is a global healthcare company that specializes in lifesaving medicines and technologies for infusion, transfusion and clinical nutrition. The company’s products and services are used to help care for critically and chronically ill patients. The product portfolio comprises a comprehensive range of I.V. generic drugs, infusion therapies and clinical nutrition products as well as the devices for administering these products. In the field of biosimilars, the company focuses on autoimmune diseases and oncology. In 2019, the first biosimilar product by Fresenius Kabi was launched. Within transfusion medicine and cell therapies, the company offers products for collection of blood components and extracorporeal therapies.

Fresenius Kabi employs more than 40,000 people worldwide and has been present in Croatia for 20 years. During this period, Fresenius Kabi has been continuously growing in Croatia, both in the number of employees and in business results. Today, it is the leader in many therapeutic areas in the country. According to the latest reports for 2020, it is within the top 20 of the largest companies in terms of turnover, out of a total of 458 pharmaceutical companies in Croatia.

We talked to Igor Kosec, Country Manager Croatia at Fresenius Kabi, about the business and HR projects that are currently in focus to them.

Can you describe the vision and mission of your business and explain how your employees contribute when it comes to achieving them?

Our corporate philosophy is „caring for life“. We are committed to supply the essential medicines and technologies to the people who help patients and to finding the best solutions to the challenges they face. We are focused on caring for life which motivates us to be excellent in everything we do. We do our job with a high level of personal commitment, passion and integrity and we are committed to teamwork and collaboration. A focus on empowerment and excellent results is built into our culture.

How do managers at Fresenius Kabi motivate their employees? What opportunities for growth and development do you offer the employees?

As a global healthcare company, Fresenius Kabi offers employees from different cultures and backgrounds a wide range of opportunities for personal and business development on both national and international level. Employees work in dedicated teams, in a creative work environment, open to new ideas. We foster a culture in which anything can be achieved.

Fresenius Kabi in Croatia supports the personal development of the employees both by internal promotions or by enlarging their responsibilities, depending on organizational and market circumstances. Employees can be promoted if their skills and experiences correspond to the competencies required for a particular job, and also by following a recommendation from the management due to employees’ dedicated work and performance.

How do you promote work-life balance of your employees?

Fresenius Kabi Croatia cares for its employees through numerous benefits that are also recognized by independent experts as above standard, which we are extremely proud of. This certainly includes the balance of private and business life. We allow employees to deal with urgent private matters even during working hours, employees can work flexible working hours, after travel and / or longer meetings they can come into work later, for business activities that include weekends we allow the use of days off during the following work weeks. We have introduced the option of working from home with all the necessary work tools and equipment. We encourage a family atmosphere in the company. Equally, we take care of the health of our employees and regularly conduct voluntary general medical examinations and provide additional insurance policies. Last but not least, we strive to provide a stimulating work atmosphere and environment every day so that employees feel comfortable during working hours, which inevitably affects the quality of life of each individual.

What were the key challenges for Fresenius Kabi Croatia in 2020? What do you expect the main challenges will be this year?

The year 2020 was challenging and specific for all segments of society, both because of the pandemic and because of the natural disasters that befell Croatia and the world. Fresenius Kabi Croatia and its employees were no exception. Very quickly we had to adapt to the new situation through the reorganization of work and activities. Although our work was difficult and sometimes seemed impossible, demanding and unusual, with the dedication of all employees we were able to respond to all challenges and overcome difficulties. Our operations have not stopped, nor has the delivery of essential medicines and technologies to healthcare professionals and institutions.

As for 2021 and our expectations, we are still witnessing very similar circumstances in which we respond to demanding challenges on a daily basis. We hope the situation, that we monitor regularly, will improve.

Your company joined the Certificate Employer Partner project last year. What do you recognize as the value of this project?

We are extremely proud of the fact that we are a holder of the prestigious Employer Partner certificate, which has shown us that we meet high standards in human resource management, but also where our company stands compared to others. The value of this project is also the possibility of insight into what we can improve to be even better, through a comprehensive process analysis. In every company, including ours, the greatest value are people. Investments in people always pay off many times over, so we plan to continue on the same path. This way, we ensure process improvement, a more successful organization, and top results - all this with satisfied current and future employees.

What are the main strategic projects that you plan to focus on in the coming period?

The main strategic HR projects in the coming period will be further digitalization of HR and the launch of local e-learning platforms for employees. We plan to introduce a new process related to employee satisfaction that will provide us with an even better basis for the process of two-way communication. Furthermore, we will work on raising awareness of the benefits of working in our company, and at the same time we will further empower managers through HR trainings.
